At the end of the spring season of year 2010, Brown Galley prepares a special exhibition titled, "Memorial Park." Particularly, this spring, flowers couldn't come into blossom with unseasonable cold weather and Korean People has fall into trauma with heartbreaking news of Cheonan ship incident. Above all, this year is the 60th year of Korean War outbreak. Ever since the Korean War ended, Korean People has just enjoyed rich life with their country's rapid economic success and forgot their woeful past. However, the peace at the Korean Peninsula has been now threatened once again through Cheonnan Ship incident and this is a time for the Korean People to rethink about their mournful history. Personally, I had a similar experience of which currently suffering bereaved families have experienced. About forty years ago, my older brother died while he was serving for his military duty with just eighty days left for his honorable discharge and probably this is the reason why I was in deep grief with full of tears on my eyes when I kept watching the scenes of many bereaved families who were expressing their mournful feeling on TV. June is the "Month of War Memorial" and we the Brown Gallery has dedicated this exhibition to the souls of all deceased patriots who died for protecting our country including my older brother (Deceased in 1972, as a Captain of Korean Army) and I hope this exhibition provides an opportunity for all visitors to remember the shining spirit of deceased patriots and their sacrifices. (작가노트) 나는 서울 곳곳에 있는 조각상에 관심을 갖고 조각상과 그것이 놓인 환경과의 사회정치적이고 도시환경적인 어긋남에 주목하여 작업하였다. 분단으로 정치적 긴장이 팽배한 한반도, 자본주의 사회의 중심도시인 서울에는 다양한 조각상들이 있다. 다른 장소에서 다른 모양을 하고 있는 해태상과 동물상, 역사적 위인들의 동상, 평등과 자유의지를 표현하는 인물상, 한국전쟁의 아픔과 목숨을 걸고 희생한 군인의 용맹함을 형상화한 군상. 무겁고 메시지가 강한 동상 앞에서 사람들은 오히려 그 진중함을 가볍고 재미있게 흉내 내며 사진을 찍는다. 그러나 장소의 성격에 부합하는 조각상과 장소와 무관하게 놓인 조각상들까지 모든 동상들은 그 의미가 무겁든 가볍든 메시지가 분명하든 분명하지 않던 기념비적인 의미를 가지고 있으며 나는 조각상에서 이 사회의 성격, 현실의 문제를 읽어낼 수 있었다. 즉 나는 조각상을 매개로 다각적인 측면에서 현실의 풍경을 해석하고자 하였는데 그 중에서도 흥미로운 풍경은 한국전쟁의 아픔을 기억하고 나라를 위해 희생한 전사자에 대한 추모와 애도의 목적으로 제작된 조각상과 그 조각상에 즉각적으로 반응하는 사람들의 모습이었다. 이제는 일상이 되어버린 분단의 상처에 유연하게 반응하는 사람들의 풍경을 보여주는 것이기도 하고, 60년을 넘게 지속된 분단된 현실을 다시 한 번 환기시키고자 하는 것이기도 하다.
2010년 봄의 끝자락에서 브라운 갤러리는 뜻있는 한 전시를 기획해 보았습니다. 특히나 올 봄은 이상저온으로 봄꽃마저 꽃봉오리를 늦게 틔우며, 충격적인 천안함 사건으로 침울하고 우울해져 있는 사람들의 마음을 더욱 더 침통하게 만들었습니다. 올해는 6.25전쟁이 터진지 60년을 맞는 해이기도 합니다. 우리는 그 60년이 흐르는 동안 발전된 조국의 화려한 삶 속에서 안보의 의미조차 망각한채... 조국분단의 현실을 외면하고 각자의 행복한 삶을 추구하며 열심히 살아왔습니다. 어느날 갑자기 날아든 천안함 비보에 우왕좌왕하며 당황하는 우리의 모습을 보며, 분단조국의 뼈아픈 현실을 새삼 돌아보게 되었습니다. 소중한 인연들을 영원히 떠나보내며 오열하는 천안함 유족들의 모습을 TV로 지켜보며 나 또한, 40여년前 ROTC 군 복무 중 제대 80일을 앞두고 사고로 숨진 사랑하는 오빠를 동작동 국립묘지에 안장한 아픈 경험이 떠올라 군 유가족의 한사람으로 남의일 같지만 않게 가슴 한쪽이 시려왔습니다. 국가보훈의 달인 6月 앞두고 우리는 브라운갤러리의 작은 공간을 기억의 공간, 애도의 공간으로 꾸며 보았습니다. 우리 모두는 그들의 희생을 영원히 기억 하며 이 전시를 사랑하는 나의오빠(육군대위 1972年사망)와 국가를 위해 희생하신 모든 호국영령들의 영전에 바칩니다. 끝으로 이번전시를 위해 수고해주신 심효선 작가님께 감사드리며 아울러 이 전시가 우리 모두 조국, 애국, 헌신, 희생... 등을 다시 한 번 생각해보는 기회가 되었으면 합니다.

Have an interest in many statues in Seoul and tried to focusing my work on discrepancies between its presence and urban environments. Korea is a country which is left to be the only divided nation in all around world and Seoul is its Capital and the biggest city, which has a long and glorious history of itself. Due to this reason, there are various kinds of statues around the city such as statues of haetae, animals, great men and statues in which carried heavy messages by itself. Each statue carries a story of its own whether it’s light, heavy, clear or unclear. However, regardless of its locations and backgrounds, people just took pictures in front of these statues without concerning its reason for being there, but for me, all statues are there to identify the histories and problems which this society has. Above all, the most appealing sceneries that I have encountered are the images of statues for the Korean War Memorial and immediate reaction of the people who were watching it. Many people took pictures with making funny gestures right in front of those statues instead of realizing their country’s mournful past and it brought me a wry smile. Year 2010 is the 60th year of Korean War outbreak and I hope my works provide the opportunities for all viewers to recognize our sad history accurately and remember the shining spirit of deceased patriots and their sacrifices for our country’s safety.
